Dorothy Parker used her monthly column in Esquire to rave about the novel when H-M published; called it the greatest Hollywood novel. Not quite but good enough. Marcus returned to obscurity. It's a heartbreaking novel, as shattering as MISS LONELYHEARTS for the same reasons.

Thanks for the comment. I didn't realize that Dorothy Parker was still around in 1963. My impression is that the book was generally well received once it got a first line publisher. Marcus, incidentally, is apparently still alive and living in Carmel.
